Winter Projects
Lots of digging has been going on so far this winter. In front of the house the two flower beds have been dug up (box hedging and all), well turned over, fertiliser added and carefully planned out – soon they will be replanted with Pittosporum, Hydrangea, Sarcococca confusa and Brunnera with ferns and Pachysandra and pockets of spring bulbs to add colour and interest.
In the Rose Garden the allium bed has been dug up – taking out the allium bulbs and geraniums first to store them. This bed has been dug up so that it can be re-planned and re-planted, but also to (hopefully!) get rid of the persistent ground elder in this area. It has been emptied and re-filled with all new Pashley compost. Once it is planted up this bed will be mulched with mushroom compost to keep weeds away, act as a fertiliser and to make it look more attractive.
We have ordered some new Peter Beales roses to go in here – Blush Noisette as a climber – a favourite from elsewhere in the garden, and some new shrub roses too. Two hibiscus will be added to mirror the existing hibiscus on the other side of the bed and the alliums will go back in along with gauras, asters, salvias etc.
